I have over the past few months been reading a few articles proposing that pepper may have developed this as a defence but not just as a defence against larger animals eating them but also to stop insects damaging the fruit.
Researchers have discovered that the chilies heat stops insects damaging the fruits while they mature.
Many of you will already know that birds are not effected by the heat and the seeds of the chilli are unintentionally distributed by birds via there droppings. This can be a useful when you are trying to keep squirels away from your bird table and a quick application of some chilli sauce can be very effective.
