Benington Lordship Chilli Festival 2010
Once again, the hardy British public ignored the changeable weather to visit the 5th annual chilli festival at Bennington.
Not long before we arrived, there had been a torrential downpour and so the grassy car park and the winding road that led to it were both muddy and sodden. This didn’t deter the chilli enthusiasts however – when we entered the grounds of Bennington Lordship, there were, like last year, masses of people of various ages looking around.
There were numerous familiar stalls; many of the stands selling sauces, plants and chilli-themed clothes had returned, as had those selling Turkish delight and chocolate. Also, despite the gale force wind which had stallholders holding down their gazebos (although even this didn’t stop some blowing over…) it was clear to see that the festival had expanded and the number of stalls had risen.
There really was something for everyone there: beautiful scenery, amusing sauce names (“snot” had to be one of the best!) and countless varieties of chilli products to test.
After exploring the festival thoroughly, we wandered back down the hill to the car park. As we did so, a girl passed us, choking and blinking rapidly. I guess some people just can’t handle the heat…
