Hot-Headz - Hot Chilli Crisps/Chips

Anyway, enough ofd the pleasentries for now, I are serious Darth and this are serious review…hmm maybe not. The product I have for you today is very special indeed, mainly because there has only been one real spicy chip manufacturer that satisfies the needs of proper chileheads..well I can tell you now thats all about to change!!

Ingredients:
Chipotle Mustard chips: Salad Mustard Solids, Salt, Maltodextrin, Modified Food Starch, Dehydrated Chipotle and Jalapeno Chili Peppers, Spices, Yeast Extract, Onion Powder, Apple Cider Vinegar, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid, and less than 2% Sunflower Oil and Silicon Dioxide used as processing aids.
Inferno Habanero chips: Natural Cane Sugar, Salt, Paprika, Dehydrated Habanero Pepper, Garlic Powder, Spices, Sunflower Oil, Natural Smoke Flavor, Extractives of Paprika, Natural Flavor, and less than 2% Silicon Dioxide used as a processing aid.

Okay, so as you can probably now tell, I have TWO bags of potato chips, or CRISPS as we call them here in the UK, and they come straight out of our very own pioneer of the UK hotsauce scene, Hot-Headz! As you can see from the photo, straight up both these bags ooze quality, from the foil wrapping and the background flames to the massive hot-headz logo emblazoned across the front you know full well that these crisps are not to be messed with, and will surely taste good? Well lets let my video do the talking,and you guys can do the watching, btw at around the 6 minute mark I do something REALLY STUPID, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!…I’ll say it again…DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

So there you have it, quite probably the finest chilli crisps in the west! I have to say that the heat on the inferno ones is a definite builder and will surely satisfy any chillihead who fancies a snack that isn’t chilli peanuts, and wants something that is actually available right now to buy The chips are of an outstanding quality, I don’t think I can stress that enough, they really are good, not greasy or underflavoured at all, crunchy and savoury and bloody tasty too!

Happy Chrimbo/Hannuka/Xmas/Christmas and whatever the heck else people celebrate/call it during the yuletide season, I know I usually say “I’ve got a cracking review for you all today” but this time I haven’t just got a cracking review, I have what could be the ULTIMATE chrimbo gift for Chilli headz, and whaddya know, it comes from the UK’s answer to Blair, our very own Gerald Fowler of The Chilli Pepper Company!!

Gerald has created a one of a kind artisan sauce, for those of you who like your collectors items, wrap your peepers round this, because its a doozy!!

Ingredients: Trinidad Scorpion and Naga Viper Chilli, Tomatoes, Vinegar, Spices, Chilli Flavour.

Okay let me just start this by saying that “Heart Throb” is by no means the hottest sauce the CPC has ever done, oh noooooo that particular badge belongs firmly on the chest of “15 Minute Burn”, but this is by far the sauce that CPC has that covers both heat and flavour in equal measures..so you could say (and I quote) that this is their hottest and tastiest sauce yet..so its the hottest of their tasty sauces!

The packaging is nothing short of fooking legendary, I thought i had seen it all, but this sauce comes in a heart shaped bottle with an oldschool style pop top, the label hanging around its neck from gold thread like a medallion of bragging rights, this one is a definite collectors bottle, its the sort of thing you’d see in a major sauce fans collection for hundreds of dollars…BUT! This is the UK we’re talking about…and its the CPC..so you KNOW its not gonna be THAT expensive..I think at this point I’ll let my video do the talking, to give you an idea of the flavour and heat of this one, take a look at this…

What did I tell you?? Its warm, but its not off the charts..its tasty, but its got a kick like a proverbial mule! But go ahead and do a dessert spoon of it and you WILL regret it, this stuff is best used sparingly, add it to dips and sprinkle on chips, chuck a bit in your chilli or mix it in to a curry..whatever you do with you’ll enjoy it, and thats the main part!

The sauce comes in three varieties and as such, commands three different price tags:

Brrrrr chilli padawanz!! Its a frigging cold November day and of course we are edging ever closer to that one day of the year where we can all eat like pigs and exchange gifts and have parties..nooo i’m not talking about my birthday, i’m talking about chrimbo of course!! This particular review is rather special for two reasons, first of all, my good friend “Nervous Nick” helped me do the video review and he’s never done one before, so this was good fun, and secondly the product featured in the review will make a perfect chrimbo bargain for anyone looking for a special gift for that chillehead in their lives!!

The product itself is the result of alot of hard work, time and effort on the part of Jamie Sythes over at the Wiltshire Chilli Farm (www.justchillies.co.uk) You may remember Jamie from the Yellow 7pot video I did with him during the Great Dorset Chilli Festival, anyway lets crack on and talk about this AWESOME gift pack!

Sooooooooooooo this is your introduction to what is quite honestly one of the bestly dressed sauce collection I have seen, the “Septenary” gift box is a lovely black leather look gift box with the words “Wiltshire Chilli Farm”, “Septenary” and a lovely silhouette of a 7pot in white on the front, inside are three bottle’s of very vivid coloured sauce, so vivid infact that you’d automatically assume they were artificially coloured, but as you can see from the ingedients list, they are’nt!!

I could easily reel off a couple of paragraphs describing the flavour and heat of these three sauces, but i think me and Nick do a grand job of describing them in the video below, its 15 mins, but we do review three cracking sauces:

So what did you think of that?? As I said in the video, if Carlsberg made 7pot sauces…you know the rest, suffice to say that for the measley sum of £15 from www.justchillies.co.uk you get a box set that any chilehead would be grateful of for Christmas (hint hint!), this pack has the heat and the flavour, and with three to choose from you are sure to have the right sauce for any dish, all in the one box, well worth the moolah if you ask me!!

Word up my chilli padawanz, how are you all doing on this crisp autumn day? Its bloody sunny and quite warm here..doesn’t really feel like autumn at all! Sooo where shall I begin with this review? AH YES! I shall start at the beginning of course! The pickle I have for you today comes from the now well known “Sinful Sauces” a company formed by a lovely couple who go by the name of Paul and Kelly, paul you might know as “DJ Brisk” I think he’s a techno DJ or something like that, I would’nt know specifics as us PithLord’s don’t really get out much you see? But that aside it’s not the music we’re here to review its the pickle!! SO lets get down to it.

Sinful Sauces - Scotch Bonnet & Pomegranate

Okay, so as you can see, there’s a whole lotta fresh ingedients going on in this pickle, none of that artificial shit here, and quite rightly so, Sinful Sauces (abbreviated to SS from here on in) pride themselves on only using the freshest ingredients and no artificial colourings or flavours, only the best for their customers ya see? Anyway, the jar itself is of SS’s usual high quality gloss finish, with lots of S’s in the background with Sinful’s trademark giant white gothic styled S in the foreground.

Ingredients: Scotch Bonnet Chillies, Pomegranate, Onion, Orange, Red Wine Vinegar, Rapeseed Oil, Spices, Ginger, Garlic.

The pickle inside is a rich reddy brown, with noticeable chunks of chilli, seeds and flecks of black and white running through. Upon opening the pickle, the first thing that hits me hard is the smell..i was expecting pomegranate and yet I got a massive whiff of orange, like someone had smacked me round the face with a bag of satsumas! I LOVE orange, and it’s not surprising I smelt it the most seeing as the third item on the ingredients list, that aside I could tell there was chilli in this, but the main fragrance was that of oranges!

The pickle inside was of an interesting consistency..it was chunkyish, but not so much that there were huge chunks of chilli or orange in it…but at the same time it was smooth enough that it would flow out of the jar albeit very, very slowly..but it still poured!! I decided enough was enough of teasing myself with this pickle, I dipped my spoon in and pulled out a rather large glob of this fantastic looking mash, placing it between my lips and moving it around in my mouth to get a fuller taste of it.

Instantly I was hit by the pomegranate and orange flavours, almost too sweet were it not for the savoury, slightly bitter hit provided by the scotch bonnet peppers! I was surprised that the flavours worked together this well..its not very often you find a sauce that starts off sweet and becomes savoury with a very indian restaurant-like aftertaste coupled with an amazing tongue burn that just keeps you coming back for another hit!

It wasn’t until I gave a single solitary hiccup did I notice that sweat was pouring down my brow, at this point I decided to stop eating the pickle and carry on writing this review.

The more I eat this stuff the more I realise that yet again Sinful Sauces have a winning combination on their hands, and yet again its a very moreish pickle that would not be out of place in an indian restaurant, the fruity zing of the orange and pomegranate, coupled with the scotch bonnet heat makes this a pickle that is well worth trying at least once!! I suspect it would be PERFECT mixed with a little sour cream and used as a nice dip for toasted pitta’s cut into strips!

At only £3.95 directly from www.sinfulsauces.co.uk this is a pickle that will last a while, and considering just how fresh the ingredients are I think its well worth the money, so make sure you get it in ready for your next indian themed meal!

Okay, let me start off by saying there aren’t many things I flout in life, rules are there for a reason, decisions are made according to moral’s and many other factors..one of these is my personal choice to be Pescetarian..a diet that consists of fish and vegetables, no red or white meat…until this review.

I will explain myself in due course, I will also explain how I dropped my pescetarianism for a few moments as my personal sacrifice to the chilli community as a whole

Let me start by saying that the product I’m reviewing today comes from the company that we in the UK have come to know, love and trust, as the UK’s premier supplier of US hotsauces and products, at very decent prices! I am of course talking about Hot-Headz!

Ingredients: Beef, Pepper, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Brown Sugar, NAGA JOLOKIA, Naga Pickle, Cayenne Pepper, CELERY, Salt, Water, Spices, Worcestershire Sauce (Malt Vinegar (from BARLEY), Spirit Vinegar, Molasses, Sugar, Salt, ANCHOVIES (fish), Tamarind Extract, Onion, Garlic, Spices), Soy Sauce (Water, Salt, SOY Bean, WHEAT Flour).

Okay, on first glance at the ingredients for Hot Headz “Naga Beef Jerky” I bet you’re all thinking “Hmmm the ingredients list seems rather long for a bit of dried beef with naga powder on it”..but thats where you’re WRONG!! This is no ordinary bag of jerky, nor is it just simply a bag of dried up beef bits with naga powder..this my friends is possibly the tastiest beef jerky you’ll ever find. Allow me to elaborate…this product right here is the reason for my slight deviation from my Pescetarian path…the ONLY time i have eaten any form of meat in the past 5 years is purely chilli meat related products..other than that i wouldn’t consider it (though i have to admit to missing it every now and then).

So it was with a mix of guilty pleasure and and a slight moral struggle thati agreed to review this product for Hot Headz.

Right moral bollocks out of the way lets discuss the actual product shall we? The packet the jerky comes in is a simple foiled plastic bag, the kind you see at farmers markets and such that contain speciality peanuts and other assorted snacks, the label on the front is a no frills affair, just the hot headz logo, a list of ingredients and the name of the product itself.. this one give you no false pretenses, instead allowing its contents to be the only deciding factor in this taste test!

Upon opening the packet a slight hint of roast beef and a big slap of naga hits me hard, the smell is a little week at first so I take a big sniff…yeah that wasn’t smart, 10 minutes later after I stopped coughing and my nose stopped burning I grabbed a couple of pieces from the bag, popped one into my mouth and then chewed. This isn’t a standard, moist beef jerkey like you’d find in your local shop, this is a high grade properly dried meat, marinated in a delicate mix of spices and flavours, one of which is the Naga and this is the flavour that shines through for me!!

The heat is a strange beast..the first one hits you like a steam train but wears off pretty quickly..the aftertaste then ropes you into having anothe rpiece, then another..all the while the heat is building, the sweat is pouring and the tongue and mouth are on fire but you don’t CARE!! This product is so moreish i literally had to give it away so that I would eat more than a few peieces..damn you Stuart for making such an annoyingly tasty anti-vegetarian (and pescetarian) product, LOL!

You can buy this stuff for a mere £2.99 a bag over at www.hot-headz.com and at that price I would suggest you buy a couple as you will go through your first in one sitting, barely breathing in between each piece, that much I promise you!! You get quite a bit for your money considering this is only a quid dearer than the moist, processed shit you can buy at the supermarket, I would take the HH naga jerky over that ANY day of the week!!

Project Spice - Flamin-Galah!

Brrrrr The nights are fair drawing in my chilli padawanz, and with the autumn upon us, the evenings are gonna start to get very cold, so its a wise idea to stock up on your favourite chilli products now, so you can keep warm when the harsh winter sets in!!

Anyway, enough of that doom and gloom bollocks, i’m here today to show you a lovely video review i did about a sauce from a company known simply as “Project Spice” The company is run by Dave and John Tidmarsh, with Dave being the main player. From what I have come to learn about Dave he is a talented chef and very much a spice connoisseur, writing his own recipes and of course, making wonderful sauces from the recipe ideas that come into his head! The sauce I have for review today has undergone a couple of revisions but finally Dave is happy with it, and under that premise he came to me with a bottle and said “Darth, its ready for review!” so with that in mind I took the bottle and began my journey.

Ingredients: Roasted Peppers, Bhut Jolokia Chilli, Onion, Cider Vinegar, Lime, Water, Garlic, Ginger, Sugar, Spices, Oil & Salt.

As you can see from the ingredients list there are a myriad of flavours within “Flamin Galah!”…which I must say at this stage is a bloody random name, and to explain it a little, Dave once told me he called this sauce after a line from home and away, a “Galah” is a species of cockatoo native to Australia, and funnily enough, like this sauce the bird itself is a lovely deep red on its chest! In amongst the red thickness of it all are seeds suspended in the sauce, upon opening it and giving it the nasal once over, I can immediately smell both the red peppers and the lime, with a slight undertone of unmistakeable jolokia frangrance.

Watch the following video to give yourselves an idea of just how hot this sauce is, take note that my latest padawan: Dave “Thecafmankilla” Ayres is a complete and utter novice when it comes to chilli..the man thinks a bloody tikka masala is hot, so you can only imagine how this one hits him, fortunately I broke him in gently using an all natural sauce…

As you just saw, this sauce is one that can certainly hold it own in a well established all natural market! Suffice to say its definitely one of the hottest all natural sauce is have tried, and beleive me i have tried a few! In the video i mentioned that the sauce costs about £5-£6 from www.projectspice.co.uk, upon closer inspection it is painfully apparent that i have been talking bollocks as this sauce is a measly FOUR QUID!! yes thats right £4!!! I thought that £6 was a decent price but this is a STEAL at £4 a bottle, so grab some now before it inevitably sells out!!

Hot Headz - Satan's Revenge

Good day my chilli padawanz!! I assume you are hungry for more video review goodness? Well i should bloody hope so otherwise this review is going to be a bit boring!!

The review today is of a lovely sauce that comes from the rather well known “Hot Headz“, a company run by Stu Mcallister and his crew of crazy chilli people!

I would give you all an intro to the company and tell you more about them but tbh we have featured them enough on here for everyone to know who they are and the products they sell, so without further adieu lets get on with this review!!

Ingredients: Crushed Naga Jolokia Chillies (75%), water, salt, scetic acid, garlic pulp, xanthan gum (natural stabiliser).

Soooooo in my hands I held a bottle that was so red you’d swear the stuff inside was blood, myself and Chilli talent were a little apprehensive of this one as I had tried a prototype sample..but this was WAYYYYYY more evil than that!! The bottle itself sports a very menacing cgi devil, along with the title of the sauce and the lovely hot-headz! branding as well, the sauce inside is quite thick but pours very well and has a lovely smooth consistency, no seeds that I could tell anyway.

I could go into more detail but i’m a firm believer that actions speak louder than words, so check the video out and meet me back here in a bit

WHOOOOMP THERE IT IS!!! As you just saw in the video, this has such an amazing flavour to it that for a second we were lulled into thinking it may not be hot, but then of course, the devil himself punched us both in the throat and made us realise what fools we had been, the heat as you can see was incredible.. I was actually tempted to have another tablespoon just for the flavour, but then common sense kicked in and reminded me of the agony I had gone through, so I backed off.

This is possibly only the second review where something has been hot enough to make me throw it back up during the review…in all honesty I did’nt think it would happen again…but SURPRISE! it took Hot-Headz! to show me that I should never say never!! Chilli talents opinion was similar to my own:

Chilli Talent: “you get just as much heat from it without the extract taste, it holds both flavour and heat for a good period of time and I had no cramp from this one, great looking sauce, thick and deep bloody red, ideal for both cooking because of the thick garlic taste and on its own for a good kick from the red man himself wearing his special edition back door shoes ”

So there you have it chileheadz, a sauce fit for Beelzebub himself and worthy of the name, you can pick this up for a measly £4.99 a bottle over at www.hot-headz.com and put in the comments box that I sent you..Stu will have a good laugh at that!!

Scovilla's Dragonfire - End Of Time

Good day my chilli padawanz!! Today I bring you a cracking video review that was undertaken by myself and the venerable Chilli Talent after a hard weekend at West Dean Chilli Fiesta 2011, CT decided it would be a good idea to do a chilli review after such a cracking weekend, sort of a big sendoff for the large Welshman who was going home with tales of fire and spice, so who was I to turn that down?

Scovilla is a relatively little known company over here in the UK, given that they are based in Germany that comes as no big surprise, lol! Scovilla have been around for a couple of years now and they are Germany’s number one hotsauce reseller, but the also do their own range of hotsauces too, and thats what we’ll be reviewing one of today!

Ingredients: Habanero peppers, naga peppers, water, onions, capsicum extract, vegetable oil, salt, tomato paste, cocoa powder, passion fruit, acetic acid, cane vinegar, garlic powder, citric acid, xanthan gum, passion fruit essence.

Even from the bottle alone you can tell this sauce is gonna hurt..the label is a VERY busy one, with both english and german present, theres lots of warnings about the sauce being extremely hot, right down to the “blast power” scale (which hits a 4 out of 4 for this sauce btw) and the little flying saucer that says “too hot, we’re off”. The high quality printed label also feature a dragon with flames coming from its mouth and its eyes lit up..i can only imagine that this happened after drinking the sauce inside!

I could say a few more words about the bottle and such but i’ll let you guys see for yourselves…

I knew it was gonna be hot..but even then it STILL took me by surprise! and CT was taken aback a bit too as you could see in the video he described the sauce as “a saturday night punch-up, in your mouth” and i don’t think i could put it any better than that, CT did drop me an email with a few words about the sauce too:

Chilli Talent: “apart from the initial quick blast of chocolate taste, its heat all the way, unless you are a dumb ass then the sauce should be used in cooking, not for enjoyment, only someone with the insides of a cement mixer would enjoy this!”

So there you have it, this stuff is for serious heat seekers ONLY so bear that in mind when considering a purchase..of course they have other “Dragonfire” sauces with less heat too!

This particular sauce comes in 2 sizes, the 2oz bottle that was featured in the review is a mere €4.90 (£4.31) or you can get a full size 150ml industry standard bottle for €9.90 (£8.71) so as you can see, for a sauce that should really be only one drop at a time to food, this is a pretty good price.. I can only imagine that this must be perfect for making a chilli due to the chocolate contained in it!!

As some of you will no doubt know by now, I have a horrible tendency of putting myself through absolute misery with some of the worlds hottest sauces…well this time, it was someone elses turn! The results were nothing short of magical, pure entertainment with a little bit of input on the flavour of each sauce used and of course LOTS of comments about the burn, and how much paid they were in

Ingredients: 5,10 and 15 minute burn, Who Dares Burns 2nd Assault, Satans Shit, Infinity and Beyond + Firesticks and of course roughly 8 million SHU vodka!

It all started when I decided they needed a GOOD kickstart to the day, so i took them to www.chileseeds.co.uk for a healty dose of 5, 10 and 15 minute burn…and it kinda just went all downhill from there!!

So there ya have it, a bunch of true chilli padawanz who may just be Jedi after doing such a feat of hotsauce tomfoolery with a healthy dose of human stupidity!! Its at this point I must say a massive thankyou to all 5 of the padawanz that took part in this challenge, they really were determined and took it well, without them this video would have been crap..obviously!

Wellllll Good morning my chilli padawanz, how are you all today? This review today is rather special, not just because it marks my first video review in what seems like FOREVER, but also because the sauce i’m reviewing is a very special sauce thats made extra special by the nature of its sales..confused yet?…all will become clear shortly! Now i know that not many of you will have heard about “Papa Djabs” but lets just say this company has been in business for over 20 years! The original recipe for Papa Djabs sauce started off in London restaurant kitchens and was the work of eclectic Scottish chefs. The exact recipe of the sauce base has never been disclosed, and is kept a closely guarded secret to this day! Fast forward a few years and today Papa Djabs sells the sauces on ebay with 10% of the sale going to the “Help for Heroes” charity (www.helpforheroes.org.uk) which I think you’ll agree is a very noble cause! Anyway, lets get on with the review!!

Papa Djabs - XXX Black Label Hot Sauce

Ingredients: Chillies (70% fresh and dry), vinegar, sugar, salt, herbs and seasonings.

So here we have Papa Djabs “XXX Black Label” hot sauce, from the ingredient list you can already see that this sauce has a base ingredient of 70% CHILLI!! yep thats right SEVENTY PERCENT!! SO with such a high chilli content you can glean 2 things from that:

Its going to be WARM!
Its going to let the flavour of the chilli shine through and not be swamped by other flavours!

The bottle I have in the video is the old design, but you also see that I show the new design as well, so going off the new design I personally think its a cracking label, the lady on the bottle looks like a right bitch and has a proper Bettie Page/50′s pinup look to her and as such lends this sauce a hint of sexiness, that coupled with the fiery background and bright red lettering leads you to believe this is one sauce not to be messed with..and lets be honest since when did something called “Black Label” EVER have good intentions?

Twisting off the cap and giving this the olfactory once over immediately made me aware of the high chilli content, I could smell the naga and habanero above all else, even taking a deeper whiff I could’nt detect anything besides the chilli, so that was a good start. I poured this onto my tasting spoon and as you can see the consistency is awesome, a nice pouring sauce for the chilli mentalists out there, there was no seeds at all, Papa Djabs actually has a policy of not including the seeds as they have nothing to add to the sauce!

So there you have it! As you can see from the video i had some trouble trying to talk through the hiccups, this is a sauce that hits you hard and fast with a punch of flavour and heat combined in one mouth owning experience, and unlike extract based sauces this one is all natural, the burn is clean and does’nt hang around for ages and ages which gives you more time to enjoy the actual Naga and Hab flavours present.

The initial sweetness took me by surprise but then the savoury flavours crept in after the burn, it was a weird combination to tell the truth, but for some reason in this sauce it works really, really well, something i would’nt have expected from a sauce that hits both taste receptors!
