Fire Foods Chilli Jam

Fire Foods Chilli Jam

My mother-in-law ate some of this experimentally and nearly melted, dubbing us “bloody mental” for having it in the fridge. Fire Foods’ Fire Jam is worth getting if only to scare old people.

It’s more of a jelly than a jam, with a thick, hard consistency. This is no bad thing; it spreads easily on toast, and thanks to its physical nature you can cover the surface of whatever it is you’re seeking to enheaten with a small amount. There are no lumps in it at all.

The jar reckons it’s great with toast, bagels, croissants, cheese and cold meat; I can’t argue with that. It’s 175ml for £3.50. Fire Jam’s really sweet, and the ingredients have been kept simple:

Ingredients: Apple, Sugar, Pectin, Chilli Extract and Cinnamon.

Jar kindly supplied by Fire Foods

My biggest problem with it is that it has a sense of artificiality. There’s a stringent note to its odour. It tastes mega-appley and it has a well above-average heat level, but I feel I’d be scoring higher if the freshness of the fruit had been replicated with chillis as opposed to extract. Nice lumps of pepper and a natural heat would have lifted the entire concept.

But. It’s tasty; we’ve eaten it all; and it greatly distressed my mother-in-law. All reasons to definitely give this a shot.

Satan's Spawn - Evil Hot Gummi Bears

Satan's Spawn - Evil Hot Gummi Bears

These are evil hot gummy bears, as the description on the packet reads! And they really do mean it! These cute little bears bite back!

Are you, like me, a gummy bear fan? And a chilli fan? These seem ideal! They are small, orange gummy bears with a cute and harmless appearance, as innocent as any bear shaped gummy sweet could be! They even smell innocent, with a Delicious and inviting fruity smell. However, this is all an act and they are trying to deceive you! Be warned! I immediately popped one in my mouth, naively thinking to myself “what harm can a little gummy bear really do?” – famous last thoughts! Fruity gummy bear flavour starts, but they soon bite back with heat, and oddly enough its all on the left side of my mouth! The flavour is intense and hot and completely takes you by surprise! My immediate reaction was “where is Hot Juan? He has to try these!” and he did, and they did the same thing to him! These bears have bite!

So, what do they contain I hear you ask?

Ingredients: glucose syrup, sugar, gelatine, citric acid, habanero chilli, fruit concentrate (grape, apple, apricots), flavourings, coating agent: vegetable oil, bees wax(E901).

Satan’s Spawn kindly provided by www.hot-headz.com

You can really smell the fruit concentrates and you can taste them to start with too, but then the habanero kicks in and really takes over your entire mouth!

These evil but cute creatures come in bags of 250g, with a label on the front warning you about their evilness – stating it isn’t their fault, these spiteful little devils were just born bad! They can be bought at the very reasonable price of £2.99 from the hot-headz website.

Brilliant for birthdays or christmas, or taking to the cinema as a spicy sweet alternative while you enjoy your film! Or if your feeling cheeky this halloween, you could even use them as a trick treat for those annoying trick or treaters!

The Dartmoor Chilli Farm has sent us a jar of its Chilli Jam to taste, it comes in a 227g jar, on opening there is a very distinctive waft of Jalapeño, it has a distinctive  orange red colour, but this jam is not clear having a slightly cloudy appearance, in which you can see the occasional seed.

Dartmoor Chill Farm - Chilli Jam

Dartmoor Chill Farm - Chilli Jam

Initially the  taste comes from the roasted red peppers, and this is followed by the Jalapeños, with a nice sweet over tones from the Apples and Sugar. This goes well with a nice strong cheese and crackers or how about glazed on to some cooked ham.. The mouth is starting to water just thinking about the possibilities.

Ingredients: Roasted Red Peppers 70%, Apples, Sugar, Wine Vinegar, Fresh Jalapeño Chillies  6%, Sea Salt.

This is a relatively low sugar jar compared with may other commercial products I have tasted, the quality of the ingredients is exceptional, a true delicacy in the mouth. I am going to take what is left for my cooking class to taste, we are working on some simple Tex/Mex dishes tonight and this will be idea to add a hint of sweet heat that they all can enjoy.

We have  the Dartmoor Chilli Farm listed in our UK Grower/Wholesellers/Retailers sections and have a short article on them if you would like to know more about this regional grower.

To order your own jar visit www.dartmoorchillifarm.co.uk where you can also find a local stockist.

Dragons Breath

Dragons Breath

Its a Wednesday evening, i’ve just finished work only to get home and realise that i’ve been a little slack and must do a sauce review, then of course the difficulty comes in choosing what sauce to review, a quick look through past reviews and future bottles in front of me leads me to notice that I have’nt covered a sauce from the “Chilli Pepper Company” for a while, so here it is! Ged at the Chilli Pepper Company is mad northerner who delights in two things:

  1. Making very tasty homemade sauces using the freshest ingredients for everyone to enjoy.
  2. Attempting to kill me by way of the hottest sauces he can muster up.

Thankfully this is one of the former for a change, but don’t be fooled its not all fluffy pillows and candy floss, not in my world baby!!

Ingredients: tomatoes, fresh bhut jolokia, vinegar, onions, apricots, apple, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, thyme, basil, turmeric.

(Review bottle kindly supplied by Ged over at www.chileseeds.co.uk)

“Dragon’s Breath” is a sauce that on first picking up I honestly did’nt think would be that hot, even though Jolokia’s are on the list of ingredients there were plenty of other ingredients that I was sure would bring the heat down a couple of notches, perhaps even till it was barely noticeable.. I was wrong.

The bottle is one of the usual 140ml glass bottles that most of CPC’s sauces come in, this one is adorned with another of their high quality glossy labels, with the name of the sauce, the website and a blue dragon breathing fire on the front. It calls itself a “Deadly Hot Caribbean Chilli Sauce” but I was’nt put off by this as alot of “Caribbean” sauces claim to be “really hot” but they are’nt! The sauce inside is quite a bright yellow with colourful flecks of black, red, green and white moving about as i gave the bottle a good shake.

I popped the cap and took a big sniff of the contents, straight off I could smell vinegar, apricots, garlic and mustard.. which is good as those are on the ingredients list LOL! I grabbed my tasting spoon, looked at the bottle for a minute then chuckled and lifted the bottle to my lips taking a hearty swig of the stuff within… I soon learned this to be a HEINOUS oversight on my part and I was about to be taught a valuable lesson.

Usually i would’nt judge a sauce without tasting it, but i saw this one as one of Ged’s milder sauces so I was’nt worried, i knew it would taste damn good, but the heat would’nt be so bad, as expected the flavours that hit me instantly were apricot and garlic, with a bit of apple, a smatter of mustard and a hint of jolokia to keep even the most fussy “Flavour snobs” happy…then the heat kicked in, I was’nt expecting this so of course I lunged for my milk and after taking a large mouthful realised that this sauce gets it heat from the jolokia, so I should have known better! It provides a strong burning sensation on the tongue, that transforms into an intense wave of heat that moves to the back of your throat and stays there for a little while!

Not a sauce to be laughed at, this one provides enough heat to keep hardcore chillinutterz happy, but the flavour is definitely a caribbean one and certainly tastes better than alot of supposed “caribbean” sauces that primarily use scotch bonnets, this sauce dares to be a little different with it use of fiery jolokia pepper blended brilliantly with different fruits to create a very fruity sauce. You’ll find no extract here as the burn is provided naturally by the Jolokias!!

You can buy a bottle right now over at www.chileseeds.co.uk for the low price of £6.50, and at that price i honestly have nothing more to say except but it, and I promise you won’t regret it!!

Till next we meet my chillifriendz, have a hot one and may the sauce be with you!
