Bee Sting Brand ThaiSting — Sweet Chili Sauce

By Hot Juan, September 6, 2010 8:53 am
ThaiSting - Sweet Chili Sauce"

ThaiSting — Sweet Chili Sauce”

The Bee Sting range is from the Half Moon Bay Trading Company, who‘s Iguana range of hot sauces have been a favourite of mine for many years.

On opening there is a strong smell of garlic and ginger, the sauce is a semi translucent orange/red with lots of chilli seeds and pieces of chilli flesh floating in the mix.

Ingredients: Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Tomato Paste, Crushed Dried Red Pepper, Modified Corn Starch, Honey, Garlic, Salt, Cane Vinegar, Onion, Ginger, Beet Powder & Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).

The initial taste is from the garlic and ginger, with the heat from the chillies warming the back of the throat, this is not a very hot sauce, but it does leave a nice sticky honey taste on the lips.

The label design is excellent, very bright and appealing, but at £3.99 for a 148ml bottle it is a little expensive for a Thai style dipping sauce.

This would be a good accompaniment to a Thai green curry, or as a finishing glaze on ribs or chicken.

Holy Cow! — Himalayan Hot Garlic Review

By Lizzi, August 18, 2010 9:37 am
Holy Cow - Himalayan Hot Garlic

Holy Cow — Himalayan Hot Garlic

Indian food has become very popular and readily available. I love Indian food and this Indian influenced hot sauce is no exception. This is the perfect sauce for and fans of Indian and Garlic!

When opening this sauce, be careful, you will be hit by a strong garlic smell. You can get a hint of a slight lemon scent and a fair amount of chilli. It has the thin consistency that you would expect from a sauce, dip or dressing the ingredients are well mixed and the sauce does not seperate.

The sauce is a dark Orange colour with small flecks of white – small pieces of garlic – and red flecks of chilli suspended within it. When tasting the sauce the first thing you taste is the lemon, which is not too strong but is defiantly there. Following the lemon, there is a very powerful garlic punch which then leaves with a slight heat at the top and back of the mouth and in the throat.

The sauce isn’t hot; just has a very pleasantly warming. The main flavour is garlic rather than chilli; the chilli is used as a complementing flavour rather than the main attraction. This sauce would be great with prawns or chicken. It could also be used in stir-fry or for dipping or spreading. Alternatively, mix it with some salad cream or a different but tasty thousand island dressing!

Ingredients: Water, Garlic (19%), Red Chilli Puree (10%), Sugar, Lemon juice concentrate (5%), Habanero Chilli Puree (peppers, salt, acetic acid), Salt, Cornflour, Garlic Granules, Colour (paprika extract), stabiliser (xanthan gum), Crushed chilli.

Seeing this it is obvious where the flavours you can smell and taste are coming from! Great mixed into all kinds of food! I’m off camping tomorrow for a week and this is accompanying me to brighten up my baked beans!

The sauce contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It is suitable for Vegetarians, Vegans and coeliacs and is Gluten free. It comes in a 290g bottle and is available at ASDA for £1.00.

The Chilli Jam Company – Chillirissa

By Hot Juan, July 14, 2010 9:49 am

The Chilli Jam Company was established in 2005 by Tessa and Sue, during their first year they managed to win a prestigious Great Taste GOLD award.

The Chilli Jam Company - Chillirissa

The Chilli Jam Company — Chillirissa

We have a jar of their Chillirissa, which is a mix of Onions, Sun Dired Tomatoes and Chillies with Garlic, sugar and spices, it was developed to be used in cooking to add both heat and flavour.

On opening the jar, the contents is a thick light red/orange paste with a lovely smell of garlic and onions, the taste is wonderfully hot and pungent, the initial taste is from the onions, quickly followed by the chilli and then the richness of the sun dried tomatoes, this leaves a beautiful flavour in the mouth, it is hot and rich and yes I am really enjoying this.

Ingredients:- Onions, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Fresh Red Chillies (12.5%), Garlic, Sugar, Spices and Salt.

This makes an great dip when added to yoghurt the same mix can even be used as a marinade, or how about just stuffing some under the skin of a chicken breast and roasting in the oven.

Nando’s New and Improved Tomato and BBQ Sauces

By Hot Juan, July 12, 2010 10:06 am
Nando's New Improved Sauces

Nando’s New Improved Sauces

A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of bottles of New Improved Nando’s Peri-Peri BBQ Sauce and Peri-Peri Tomato Sauce in my local supermarket (Yes sometimes we have to purchase sauces), unfortunately I had not tried the previous version of these two products so I cannot tell how much they have improved.

Both of these products are rated by Nando’s as medium, they contain no artificial Colours, Preservatives, and MSG and both are suitable for vegetarians. (Did you know that the word vegetarian comes from the Latin “vegetus” meaning “lively”.

Now back to the sauces:-

Nando’s Peri-Peri BBQ Sauce

This is described on the bottle as “Take BBQ sauce. Blend with Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce. Beat chest. Lick lips. Tuck in”.

I have to say on opening the sauce does smell like BBQ with Lemon, which is one of the major flavour ingredients in Nando’s sauces I have tasted in the past. The Initial taste is very strongly of Lemon as well, with a tomato overtone followed by a hint of BBQ flavour, before the Lemon takes back over again.

There are a few seeds floating in the mix which is otherwise a smooth thick consistency.

Ingredients:- Sugar, Water, Tomato Paste, Malt Vinegar (from Barley), Spirit Vinegar, Soya Sauce (Water, Salt, Glucose, Soy Beans, Barley Malt Extract, Spirit Vinegar, Wheat Flour), Thickener (Modified Maize Starch), Vinegar, Onion, Lemon, Paprika, African Bird’s Eye Chilli (Peri-Peri Chilli), Vegetable Oil, Salt, Cayenne Pepper, Molasses, Smoke Flavouring, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic, Stabiliser (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum).

There is a little bit of heat that builds up in the back of the throat, but nothing to cause any concern to putting this sauce out with children present.

Nando’s Peri-Peri Tomato Sauce

This is described on the bottle as “Tomato sauce blended with Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce. Rocket science? No. Delicious? Yes.

Like the BBQ this again has a Lemon smell on opening, it is a lighter red colour, and the consistency you would expect from a Tomato sauce.

If anything this has an even more Lemon taste, and while not hot the warmth is now on my tongue , the Lemon is the flavour you expect from Nando’s sauces and this defiantly has Lemon coming over all the other flavours, I did not feel that the tomato flavour was strong enough, while not unpleasant this sauce is not a winner for me, if anything the Lemon is a little bitter and has had to be sweetened with to much Glucose-Fructose Syrup and sugar, the sweetness and flavour of the Tomatoes has been lost.

Ingredients: Water, Tomato Paste (15%), Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Sprit Vinegar, Sugar, Thickener (Modified Maze Starch), Vinegar, Salt, Onion, Lemon, African Bird’s Eye Chilli (Peri-Peri Chilli), Vegetable Oil, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Bay Leaf, Chilli Pepper, Paprika, Natural Flavouring, Stabiliser (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum).

I love some of the Nando’s product range, and while the BBQ sauce, I can see myself using if I find it at a BBQ, the Tomato sauce is not better for the addition of the Nando’s magic.

Old Texas BBQ — Original Barbeque Sauce Review

By Hot Juan, June 15, 2010 9:53 am
Old Texas BBQ - Original Barbeque Sauce

Old Texas BBQ — Original Barbeque Sauce

The bottle tells us that this Barbeque Sauce comes from authentic recipe via the cowboy trails from El Paso to San Antonio dating back to the 1850’s.

I love BBQ and BBQ sauces, but here in the UK we use BBQ Grills and so these type of sauces need to be used correctly and only added to food either after cooking or during the last few moments of cooking. Unlike marinades or rubs they contain lots of sugar, which if used on the direct hear of a BBQ grill will burn and start to taste very unpleasant.

This BBQ sauce is a real find, it is sweet, but not overly sticky, it has a excellent smoky flavour, that is imparted by some liquid smoke, but without the chemical after taste I often find with added smoke flavours.

It coats the food well; we used it on some chicken, adding it after cooking, it really enhanced the flavour of the food.

Ingredients: Water, Brown Sugar, Tomato Paste, Prepared Yellow Mustard, Distilled Vinegar, Liquid Smoke, Molasses, Granulated Garlic Salt, Salt, Chilli Powder, Dehydrated Onion, Onion Granulated, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Cayenne Pepper, Ground Cumin, Ground Oregano, Ground Cloves.

(Bottle kindly provided by Hot Headz)

I don’t think I have tasted a better Texas style BBQ sauce in the UK, each of the ingredients works well together to produce a product packed with flavour. In many cases this sauce can be used rescue that burned burger, chicken, or sausage and make our BBQ Grills a pleasure to use.

If you like BBQ, don’t buy a cheap smoky BBQ sauce from the supermarket again.

You can order this one online at www.hot-headz.com, it comes in a large 510g bottle, so there will be plenty to go around and at only £3.99 it is well worth it.
