The Purple Naga – 1,581,800 SHU Hoax

Hoax - The Purple NagaWe had a bit of fun this month with recports on Twitter that a new Chilli had been tested in Mumbai India at 1,581,800 SHU, the new chilli was called the Purple Naga. Unfortunalty this turned out to be a hoax, the picture of the chilli turned out to be photoshop’d from an older image.. The purple colour did seem a little unreal.

Holy Cow Madras Spicy Mint

Holy Cow Madras Spicy Mint

The weather is so unseasonally warm and sunny, it must be BBQ time, and looking through the review stock I found a bottle that had been passed by at then end of last year, Holy Cow’s Madras Spicy Mint. We don’t get many sauces submitted for review that are white?

The Holy Cow Food Company has been doing very well over the past few years, they started developing recipes in a home kitchen by Kiran Bhandari, they have now happy moved into a manufacturing facility in in Witney, Oxfordshire. All the sauces are free from artificial colours, preservatives and flavourings and are suitable for Vegetarians, Vegans and Ceoliacs.

The sauce is milky white with pieces of dried herbs floating evenly in the mix, it is nice and thick, very much like the yoghurt that makes up the main ingredient. it smells mildly of garlic and mint.

Ingredients: Yoghurt (55%), Water, Garlic Puree (Garlic, Acidity Regulator: Citric Acid), Habanero Chilli Puree (Habanero Peppers, Salt, Acidity Regulator: Acetic Acid), Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Dried Onion (1%), Mint (1%), Salt, Acidity Regulator (Lactic Acid), Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum).

It tastes very much at first like a Raita you would find as a condiment in the Indian restaurant with some bits of finely chopped onion and bits of mint and garlic, but then you get the warmth from the Habanero Chillies, it is not a monster in heat terms, the yoghurt makes sure of that, and it makes and excellent dip with crisps or on chips. For a bottled sauce this tastes very fresh, if you poured it in a bowl you could get away with letting people think you has just made it..

On the web site they have a recipe using the sauce for “Lamb Kathi Kebab…in mins!” which looks like a great use for the sauce, but it would also make a great salad dressing with added little oil and vinegar.

You can buy this sauces in ASDA, Sainsbury’s and Budgens, so you can undoubtedly pick up a bottle locally, and at the moment you can get a bottle of Holy Cow Sauces from Sainsburys for just 99p.

Holy Cow – Mango & Chilli BBQ

Holy Cow – Mango & Chilli BBQ

The Holy Cow Food Company is one of the UK’s most interesting sauce companies, their sauces are not the usual run of the mill flavours, they always have an interesting extra twist, they have managed to successfully sell in to the supermarkets (ASDA, Sainsbury’s and soon in Budgens), they also have a big and loyal following in twitter.

Their sauces are not on the extreme end of the heat range usable by the whole family.

The smell of this sauce is just idyllic, the first thing I can smell is mint ( this just shows how little dried mint you need to use as it is the last ingredient in the list), then the sweet mango takes over, I could be sitting on a warm beach BBQ’ing chicken with the kids.

Ingredients: Water, Mango (17%), Sugar, Tomato Paste Concentrate (6%), Cornflour, Tamarind Concentrate, Sprit Vinegar, Salt, Chilli Powder, Garlic Powder, Garam Masala (Coriander, Cumin, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Ginger, Star Aniseed, Green Cardamom, Pimento, Black Cardamom, Bay Leaves), Mustard Seed, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Colour (Caramel Sugar Syrup, Paprika Extract), Habanero Chilli Puree (Habanero Chilli Puree, Salt, Acidity Regulator: Acetic Acid) Dried Mint.

The sauce is a mid brown colour with a good thick consistency its great for pouring on the piece of BBQ chicken, the taste is full of flavour it starts with the mint and then the sweet mango and black pepper from the Garam Masala and finally a bit of warmth from the Habanero puree, there is no nasty after taste, this is an all natural quality sauce.

I am really enjoying trying this sauce, my mind is wandering about how to use it.. Roasted Chicken BBQ sauce sandwich, Chicken kebabs……

What can I say, this is a case when we need to get past the snobbery of buying a sauces from the supermarket and enjoy these excellent sauces, at about £1.50 per bottle this stuff could not be better value, you are getting a lot of sauce for the ££.

You can find your local stockist at www.holycowfc.com as well as recipes, user forum etc etc
