Jalapeno

The Chilli Garden - Jalapeno & Mint

The Chilli Garden Jalapeno 'n' Mint

This is a good one. The Chilli Garden’s Jalapeno ‘n’ Mint Sauce neatly fits a gap left by the sometimes tiresome bravado of the chilli sauce world’s heatmongers, delivering an interesting product you can use outside of the traditional fried fish and sausages.

This a low-heat sauce for less robust foods. It works well with salad, for instance. The flavour’s sublime, packing a bunch of mint over a refreshing body of spring water and fresh jalapeno. It’s not trying to be anything it’s not, and what it does it does well.

Ingredients: Jalapeno Chillis (40%), Mint (5%), Distilled Vinegar, Spring Water, Sea Salt, Xanthan Gum.

There’s quite a sharp vinegar hit on the nose, and the gum adds a gloopy edge to the consistency, but that shouldn’t detract from this must-try. Clean, green, summery and well executed, it’s a welcome diversion from the norms of jolly rogers and power-heat.

It appears to be out of stock at the moment, unfortunately, but you can take a look at the rest of The Chilli Garden’s excellent range  here.

Vadden’s Whizz-Bang 8 Hot Chilli Relish

Vadden’s Whizz-Bang 8 Hot Chilli Relish

Well to start off I can tell you absolutely nothing about this company I’m afraid. Don’t know where they are based, other products they may do, how much this relish is or even how to contact them. Which I find pretty hard to understand as this relish is a pleaser for all. Label looks as though it’s a home made one which is something I always like, you get so much more of a personal feel for any product this one, almost like it was made especially for you. Roaring fire background with ingredients one side and the usual information saying if you get chilli in your eye you deserve a slap, well not exactly that but you get where I’m coming from. 212ml Jam jar that shows what looks to be a strong tomato and onion blend with shreds of chilli and packed to the brim with seeds. Texture looks just short of chunky, maybe a touch smoother than spreading pickle.

Ingredients: Tomatoes, Onions, Blend of fresh and dried chilli peppers (Chipotle, Sarrano, Aji amerillo, Jalapeno, Guajillo, Mesillo, Bhut Jolokia and Ring of fire), Sweet red pepper, Sugar, White wine vinegar, Corriander, Cinnamon.

Jar kindly provide by Vadden’s

Large selection of Chilli’s in here and many of which are not seen all that often in any chilli product. But then you do get some of the regulars making an appearance, Chipotle, Jalapeno and Bhut jolokia. So a wide contrast of flavours and heats in this relish alongside a sweet mix of red pepper, sugar and Cinnamon. Sounds like everything is in this on flavour and heat from A to B and this shows in the aroma too. The heat of the Chillis are keen to make a stand but the second they do the smell of a sweetness takes over and this is repeated again and again. I fancy a taste now.

The flavour of this relish is to die for. The sweetness is beautifully blended into a slightly above mild heat which comes in waves. Slow and steady build up before retreating and building back up and maintaining. Despite having a big daddy like th Bhut Jolokia in this it is surprising as I was expecting a massive punch of heat, not this warm, soft textured spreadable sweet relish. When I say sweet, it is exactly the perfect sweetness for me, and I’m a one sugar in a cuppa tea bloke so I hope that helps you out a bit more. Very keen on learning more about this company so if you work for this company or have any more information please comment below. Be great to know more. This relish would be awesome for dipping and as a sandwich filler but I am sure you can find many many more uses for this, I will without a doubt be splashing this on a bit of anything that’s edible hehe.

As I said above guys I have no idea where this one came from, so please let me know if you know anything. Tasty relish not to be missed.

So until next time Chilliheads remember, if it burns going in, it will burn coming out.

Panola 10 Point Buck Sauce

Panola 10 Point Buck Sauce

The Panola Pepper Corporation is based in Lake Providence, Louisiana USA . It was started in 1983 by Grady “Bubber” Brown the son Martha Wyly Brown who’s recipe for Louisiana Sauce was used as a way of employing the farm workers over the winter months. This original Panola Gourmet Pepper Sauce was such a success  the business has  now grown to employ 30 people making nearly 100 different products.

Traditional Louisiana Hot Sauce is a mixture of Cayenne Chilli Peppers, Vinegar and Salt, generally these sauces are unthickend, in the UK  we would know such brands as Frank’s RedHot and Tabasco Sauces as being Louisiana Style Hot Sauces.

This sauce is based on the Louisiana Hot Sauce style but has some seasoning’s added as the Panola web site says “It is specially blended for the outdoorsman” and just in case you are wondering what a 10 Point Buck it is a term used to describe a male deer and the 10 points refers to the number of points or tines on his antlers the more points generally the older the deer.

After that lesson, I better crack open the bottle and see what it is like, the initial smell comes from the chillies with a mix of the Cinnamon and All Spice, the sauce is a dark reddy brown colour, a second smell of the sauce reveals a slight aroma of the vinegar.

This sauce is as what I expected, there is a real depth to the flavours, it provides big reminders of  cooking a highly spiced lamb dish a while ago, the more I taste the more I also think of  Jamaican influences with the all-spice and sweetness from the sugar and the warmth from the chillies.

Ingredients: Cayenne and Jalapeno Peppers, Vinegar, Onions, Sugar, Salt, Cinnamon, All Spice & Mustard Flour.

Bottle kindly provided by www.h0t-headz.com

I can see why they would call this an outdoorsman style of sauce, while it is not hot it packs a punch from the spices, enough to turn the worst outdoors cook in to a chief (I better keep this near the BBQ I can hear you say).

I can just about tell this has Cayenne peppers in it, but with the Jalapenos and the spices it is almost completely lost.

Being that I don’t shoot many ( take that as none) Deer here in Somerset (We don’t seem to be over run with them), I think this sauce would go well here with some roast mutton, the strength of flavour from the Cinnamon and All Spice would compliment a rich strongly flavoured meat.

At only £2.99 a bottle this sauce is excellent value for you money and if you like it spiced up and not overly hot, then give it a go, everyone who I asked to try it where surprised how much they liked it.. You can order this on-line at www.hot-headz.com.
