Grim Reaper Foods - The Evil One

Grim Reaper Foods - The Evil One

‘And so it was, with the sands of time expired, the reaper came for what now was his to collect, however his plans were far more sinister. His instructions were simple, to remain amongst us, to increase heat, and to be known from now and forever as, ‘The evil one’.

Right, I think I’ve just crapped my self already. Reading the brief text on ‘The evil one’, I turn the bottle round to find a pair of evil eyes glaring at me. I have had several products from Russell at Grim Reaper Foods and one thing that stands out every time is the packaging. Wonderful glossy label which, has been thoroughly thought about which is completely faultless. The colours, images and text compliment each other to perfection and are set upon the bottle in such a way that you get a good look at the sauce at the same time. Now the sauce looks evil too, just pouring the sauce side to side in the bottle it does not flow as such, but creeps. Slow and steady in a way that you can imagine the Grim Reaper himself just pacing about in the bottle waiting to be released. Plenty of seeds visible with a dark red to orange shade with what looks like a slight pulpy texture to it.

Ingredients: Capsicums, Scotch bonnet peppers, Onions, Cyder vinegar, Oranges, White wine vinegar, Sugar, Lemons, Carrots, Naga Jolokia peppers, Salt, Garlic, Oleoresin of capsicum, Citric acid.

Nice list of ingredients here, you can see exactly how this sauce got its colour now. One thing that does worry me is that no amounts have been put in. Normally this does not bother me until you see certain ingredients like Naga Jolokia and Oleoresin of capsicum. All I can do is take the jump and give ‘The evil one’ a chance to take me to hell and back. Smell of the sauce is quite rough an rugged. Naga and Scotch bonnet is the most powerful part of its scent, hiding behind it is a slight sweetness also. No extract type aroma coming through but why am I still crapping bricks? See you on the other side…….

Right, straight away my tongue ignites, and when I say ignites, I mean I am swallowing red hot lava. A beautiful sweetness lingers in the background an although this sauce is blisteringly hot, does not lose flavours. Very citrusy with a slight vinegar taste. The Scotch bonnets and Naga stand out proudly but the heat?????? My tongue has taken the main impact of this evil b****rd. Swirling it round my mouth and still it is an incredible sharp stabbing heat on the tongue, as soon as I swallow that’s when my entire mouth decides to join in on the fun. The heat does not focus on a particular area then move to another like many sauces I have tried, but instead engulfs every part of my mouth, tongue, cheeks and throat, I’m surprised my teeth are not on fire. Russell has really made a good sauce here. While not the hottest sauce I have ever had, its definitely got a kick which is just at the right level to keep flavour there. Mega hot burn with a real sweetness and fruity flavour. Would love this to go on a meat dish such as a burger or to spice up a stir fry.

The bottle I have was supplied by www.grimreaperfoods.com based in Hemel Hempstead and is 100mls and costs £4.99. To purchase one then email sales@grimreaperfoods.com or go to www.hot-headz.com.

So until next time chilliheads remember, if it burns going in, It will burn coming out.

Hot-Headz XXX Hot Naga Chilli Beef Jerky

Hot-Headz XXX Hot Naga Chilli Beef Jerky

Okay, let me start off by saying there aren’t many things I flout in life, rules are there for a reason, decisions are made according to moral’s and many other factors..one of these is my personal choice to be Pescetarian..a diet that consists of fish and vegetables, no red or white meat…until this review.

I will explain myself in due course, I will also explain how I dropped my pescetarianism for a few moments as my personal sacrifice to the chilli community as a whole ;)

Let me start by saying that the product I’m reviewing today comes from the company that we in the UK have come to know, love and trust, as the UK’s premier supplier of US hotsauces and products, at very decent prices! I am of course talking about Hot-Headz!

Ingredients: Beef, Pepper, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Brown Sugar, NAGA JOLOKIA, Naga Pickle, Cayenne Pepper, CELERY, Salt, Water, Spices, Worcestershire Sauce (Malt Vinegar (from BARLEY), Spirit Vinegar, Molasses, Sugar, Salt, ANCHOVIES (fish), Tamarind Extract, Onion, Garlic, Spices), Soy Sauce (Water, Salt, SOY Bean, WHEAT Flour).

Review packet supplied by www.hot-headz.com

Okay, on first glance at the ingredients for Hot Headz “Naga Beef Jerky” I bet you’re all thinking “Hmmm the ingredients list seems rather long for a bit of dried beef with naga powder on it”..but thats where you’re WRONG!! This is no ordinary bag of jerky, nor is it just simply a bag of dried up beef bits with naga powder..this my friends is possibly the tastiest beef jerky you’ll ever find. Allow me to elaborate…this product right here is the reason for my slight deviation from my Pescetarian path…the ONLY time i have eaten any form of meat in the past 5 years is purely chilli meat related products..other than that i wouldn’t consider it (though i have to admit to missing it every now and then).

So it was with a mix of guilty pleasure and and a slight moral struggle thati agreed to review this product for Hot Headz.

Right moral bollocks out of the way lets discuss the actual product shall we? The packet the jerky comes in is a simple foiled plastic bag, the kind you see at farmers markets and such that contain speciality peanuts and other assorted snacks, the label on the front is a no frills affair, just the hot headz logo, a list of ingredients and the name of the product itself.. this one give you no false pretenses, instead allowing its contents to be the only deciding factor in this taste test!

Upon opening the packet a slight hint of roast beef and a big slap of naga hits me hard, the smell is a little week at first so I take a big sniff…yeah that wasn’t smart, 10 minutes later after I stopped coughing and my nose stopped burning I grabbed a couple of pieces from the bag, popped one into my mouth and then chewed. This isn’t a standard, moist beef jerkey like you’d find in your local shop, this is a high grade properly dried meat, marinated in a delicate mix of spices and flavours, one of which is the Naga and this is the flavour that shines through for me!!

The heat is a strange beast..the first one hits you like a steam train but wears off pretty quickly..the aftertaste then ropes you into having anothe rpiece, then another..all the while the heat is building, the sweat is pouring and the tongue and mouth are on fire but you don’t CARE!! This product is so moreish i literally had to give it away so that I would eat more than a few peieces..damn you Stuart for making such an annoyingly tasty anti-vegetarian (and pescetarian) product, LOL!

You can buy this stuff for a mere £2.99 a bag over at www.hot-headz.com and at that price I would suggest you buy a couple as you will go through your first in one sitting, barely breathing in between each piece, that much I promise you!! You get quite a bit for your money considering this is only a quid dearer than the moist, processed shit you can buy at the supermarket, I would take the HH naga jerky over that ANY day of the week!!
Right, until we meet again my chilli padawanz, may the sauce be with you, always!!

Here I am again, eating chocolate in the office.. as the weather has been so hot over the last few days, I decided to review this chocolate before it had a chance to melt.

South Devon Chilli Farm - Extreme Chilli Chocolate

South Devon Chilli Farm - Extreme Chilli Chocolate

When I am reviewing chocolate that is not going to be a cooking ingredients, I look for a couple of things before putting any in my mouth, I like the chocolate to look good, it needs to have that slightly shine to the surface, then I am listening to how the bar sounds and I snap it in my fingers, I am looking for a sharp crack as it breaks.

Well this chocolate passes both of these requirements with flying colours, if fact as I tap two pieces together, there is that almost fine china sound. The chocolate does not strong smell in my air conditioned office, but what I can smell is a little hint of chillies.

Ingredients: Chocolate: 99% (of which cocoa solids 60% minimum, Sugar, Emulsifer: Soya Lecithin, Flavouring: Natural Vanilla), Hot Dried Chilli: 1%.

Packs kindly provided by South Devon Chilli Farm

So most importantly how does it taste? when initially as it melts in the mouth there is that unmistakable richness of the 60% cocoa solids chocolate, it is not as bitter and sharp as some of the chocolates I have tasted lately with higher percentages of cocoa, but at 60% is will not put off the consumer who normally would not eat dark chocolate. The warmth starts to appears as the chocolate melts in the mouth, it starts mildly and builds, at only 1%  Naga Chillies this is not going to be a killer heat, maybe extreme is a little bit of an optimistic name, but is gets hotter and hotter the more you indulge.

At £3.60 for 100g this is a premium price for a flavoured chocolate, but I think I would have no problem recommended you buy it. It’s not often that the really enjoy a chilli chocolate so much, I am glad they sent a few packs!

I think I may try grating some over my next cappuccino, that is if there is any left..

ChilliPepperPete's Naga Head Hunter Chilli Sauce

ChilliPepperPete's Naga Head Hunter Chilli Sauce

This is the hottest sauces from ChilliPepperPete that does not contain extract, it is packed with fresh Naga Jolokia Chillies from Pete’s Spanish connection, as well as some dried Naga Chillies as well, just incase this was not hot enough.

The sauce is a nice thick consistency, with a very bright red colour, if I had not read the label I would be expecting it to contain a food colouring to get this colour.  On opening the bottle the smell is fantastic, a kind of sweet, tomato, but much better than I can find words to describe it.

I am expecting this to be a pretty extreme sauce, so I am being very tentative with the quantity I am tasting, and I am still finding it very hot, it is instant heat as it hits my tongue, but while burning its way around my mouth, I can start to taste the sweet pineapple and tomato.

I think with these wonderful super hot chillies, extract sauces may have had there day, this sauce has flavour and about as much heat as I wanted today and after I cooled down the flavour is well matched to it.

Ingredients: Pineapple, Tomato, Onions, Fresh Spanish Naga Chilli, Dried Naga Chilli, Aleppo Chilli, Sugar, Garlic, Salt.

Bottle kindly provided by ChilliPepperPete

With the heat from the Naga’s the Pineapple and Tomato, this sauce works for me as a condiment with some boiled rice (as I write this I am doing a Detox, so it is great with all the brown rice), but it would also work well to pep up almost any stew or casserole.

Not overly sure about the latest label designs, I love the web site design, but these latest labels seem to be a departure from that style, for me they are  not easy to see the image, but this does not detract from the quality of the sauces Pete and is team make.

All of Pete’s sauces are good value for money, and at £4.00 a bottle this one is well worth adding to you collection.
