Spicymonkey Satay Sauce

Spicymonkey Satay Sauce

Here is, yet another brilliant product from www.spicymonkey.co.uk! If you haven’t tried their products your missing out! Read our other spicymonkey reviews and you’ll see what I mean! I first tried this product at West Dean Chilli Fiesta, and begged Hot Juan to let me review it! I think I may of eaten a large majority of the sample as well!

Spicymonkey’s satay sauce comes in a 190ml jar, that is nicely labelled and very attractive looking. It has both the name of the company and the name of the sauce boldly written on the front, with the chinese flag between them – after all, this sauce was based on a chinese one! The label also has a brief description of the product – “fragrant, mild but tingly”, an ingredients list, address and website, and a recipe suggestion – the consumers best friend!

Ingredients: Tomatoes, Pure Honey, Soy Beans, Peanuts, Salt, Sesame Oil, Peanut Oil, White Pepper, Lactic Acid and Amino Nitrogen Acid.

Jar kindly provided by Spicymonkey

When I cracked open the jar I did what I would do with any new sauce, and gave it a good sniffing! I was hit by the strong scent of sesame and peanut oil, and of course the peanuts! It smelt fantastic and really invited me to dig in! So I did! Instantly i was hit by the rich flavour of the tomatoes, and is this faded the peanut flavour kicked in, with a peppery heat at the back of my mouth. This sauce isn’t very hot, but is very rich in flavour and suitable for the whole family! It was just as good as I remember it being at West Dean!

That evening we happened to be having chicken stir-fry for dinner, and while my family used sweet chilli and other such sauces i was heaping on the satay sauce – I’m sure my family would of been to if i hadn’t forbidden them from consuming my new sauce! It was delicious!

This sauce could be used for a fairly wide range of things! I used it in stir-fry as a sauce afterwards. The recipe suggestion on the jar suggests adding it to cooked chicken along with spring onion and snap peas before serving it on a bed of rice or noodles. But you could also use it for dipping breads and raw vegetables in, or in a sandwich to give that extra boost of flavour! You could even use it as a marinade if you wanted to!

A jar of Satay Sauce costs £3.65 and can be bought from Spicymonkey (www.spicymonkey.co.uk). This is good value for a jar of sauce with so many uses! My only advice is to make sure you buy enough, because its incredibly more-ish and may not last as long as you hoped – unless, like me, you make its consumption banned for everyone but you!

The Chilli Pepper Company - Naga Basco

The Chilli Pepper Company - Naga Basco

I have a bottle in my hand, a bottle with a picture of the Devil as the main image. There’s no doubt in my mind what that means; pain, heat and lots of it!

What it actually means is an attractive artistically labelled bottle of Naga-basco, a super-sized version of the similarly named mainstream version. As always Ged and the team have used great design to achieve yet another evil looking product.

The bottle itself has a similar shape and nozzle to allow the careful sprinkling of the liquid lava within (believe me you want full control of how much you use in one go) and it’s viscosity is similar too, it’s quite runny which enables the user to sprinkle accurately.

Ingredients: Vinegar, Naga Jolokia Chilli, Salt.

Bottle kindly supplied by The Chilli Pepper Company

Once the cap is removed, a quick wave under the nostrils reveals that tell-tale aroma of the Naga, although there are different variants of the Naga, they all have a similar, fruity, powerful scent when processed. This sauce uses Naga Jolokia and by the looks of it, lots of them! The Naga Jolokia Chilli comes in at just over 1m SHU (Scoville Heat Units)

Right taste time, I pour out enough to fill a teaspoon and even before it reaches my mouth, my nose picks up the vinegar and Naga fruitiness, then it’s in.

The first impression as I move the sauce around my mouth is an unexpected slight sweetness, and then the sourness of the vinegar comes through, then the burn starts and builds steadily but not uncomfortably, so I don’t need to rush to the fridge for milk!

It’s a pleasant burn but don’t get me wrong, it’s still very hot as the label suggests and for those not used to Naga’s should still take care.

To sum up, this is a very nice sauce which can be used to spice up just about any food you want from pizza to salad. The 140ml Bottle should last a while too.

McDonald's Salsa Dip

McDonald's Salsa Dip

For a bit of fun, I decided to review a “Salsa Dip” from fast food chain McDonald’s, this 25ml pack came with a snack we had (I know I shouldn’t, but it was a coated cheese thing). I have to say, I do like the McDonalds Coffee, it has made me visit them much more.

Now normally these are not tasted by consumers with out something to dip into it, when I have had it in the past I don’t think I have even paid it much attention.

It smells quite a lot like a BBQ sauce, strongly of tomato, it is a very thick consistency, I guess that is what you need to make it stick if you are going to dip stuff in it. There seems to be almost no discernible flesh in this, it is much more like a savoury tomato sauce, this is a little chilli/pepper flavour, but is is very sweet and sticky.

Ingredients: Tomato Puree (27%), Water, Onion, Dried Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Garlic Puree, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Chillies, Green Jalapeno Pepper, Modified Maize Starch, Red Bell Pepper, Acetic Acid, Herb, Dried Chillies, Preservative: Potassium Sorbate.

I have to say that for it’s purpose it is not that bad, I don’t think I would call it a salsa, I would expect some more texture from a salsa, it is also far to sweet and needs a bit more bite, but as a alternative to Tomato sauce, it ‘s OK.

Oddly after eating it on it own I have a slight bitter after taste, maybe time for some chips or a baked cheese…

You can get your own McDonald’s Salsa dip to try and any Mc’Donalds restaurant when available but you may have to ask for it especially, if you don’t fancy the food, I can always recommend the coffee..
