National Chilli Awards 2011 - Professional Products Awards

National Chilli Awards 2011 - Professional Products Awards

Due to my late arrival, I only got to input on a few of the awards this year (I had an excuse, I had only just got back from Brazil the night before, and then got held up in the Goodwood Revival traffic), but talking to my fellow judges, this year was full of potential winners, with some very close run contests for first place.

I have to say I do agree with the eventual winners, there are some amazing products in this years competition, some of which are completely new to me. like Chinthe Burmese Prawn Balachaung which Darth Naga could not have been more impressed with, While James Wreck our US judge from www.eatmoreheat.com found to be very unusual for his US tastes.

Fallen Angle Alcoholic Ginger Beer, was amazing, and it is was not for the Purgatory White Chocolate from Grim Reaper Foods it would have been my number one find of the event (it is great to see former amateur winners back and winning in the Professional awards).

The National Chilli Awards 2011 Winners are:-

One company Sinful Sauces managed to collect two trophy’s this year for best Newcomer and Best Label, what they have achieved in just 8 months is outstanding.

Finally the award for Best Chilli Company had to go to ChilliPepperPete, this was not fix, and yes it was their event and awards, but the judges are completely independent, and I put forward others for this trophy, but really when you look at what they have achieved this year and over the past few years they have to be number one. Successfully launched a new Chilli Event. Started the National Chilli Awards. Opened one of the UK’s first Chilli shops and they worked hard to promote the UK chilli market.

Our congratulations go to all the competitors and winners and our thanks go especially to Peter, Miranda, Rose and the rest of the team at ChilliPepperPete.

The Purple Naga – 1,581,800 SHU Hoax

Hoax - The Purple NagaWe had a bit of fun this month with recports on Twitter that a new Chilli had been tested in Mumbai India at 1,581,800 SHU, the new chilli was called the Purple Naga. Unfortunalty this turned out to be a hoax, the picture of the chilli turned out to be photoshop’d from an older image.. The purple colour did seem a little unreal.

Twitter

Twitter

We have been looking at how well Hot Sauces business use the “Social Media” this month we are looking at twitter.com.

We have used klout.com to calculate the overall success rate of each account, as it takes into account the number re-tweets, which is hard to workout without a major effort.

It is however quite interesting to calculate the ratio between the number each account follows and how many follower each account has, it is common for some twitter users to follow as many people as possible in a hope of getting a higher number of followers as other users reciprocate, the lower the ratio the nearer the balance between the two.

The Chilli Jam Man - Smoky

The Chilli Jam Man - Smoky

Simon Barrett aka The Chilli Jam Man is a busy man these days his Hot Jam’s have been a great success for him with appearances on the TV and in national press, he’s one of the few people I know who uses a gas mask when making his hottest jam’s. You don’t get that at a WI Jam making session?

We have reviewed a very similar product from Simon a long time ago, but this product has evolved, there is more Smoked Garlic and Chillies in it, so back it has come for another review.

The smell when you crack the lid of the jar is divine, smoky Tomatoes, Garlic and my favourites Chipotles all mingled together, so it is quickly out with the teaspoon for a dip in the jam, the jam is not set, but is chocked full of lovely bits of flesh from the Tomatoes and Garlic, the smoke flavour lingers in the mouth, and it is a few teaspoons later before I can describe the how good this is.

Ingredients: Sugar, Tomatoes, Smoked Garlic (11%), Ginger, Red Wine Vinegar, Smoked Chipotle Chillies (2.7%), Balsamic Vinegar (Wine Vinegar, Cooked Grape must, Colour: Caramel) and Thai Fish Sauce (Anchovy extract, Salt, Sugar).

I would describe this as a mild heat product, the smoke flavour is not overpowering and brings out the flavours from other ingredients, you can taste the sweet Balsamic, ginger and tomatoes but none of them takes control, but they all work together exceptionally well

This Jam is not a favourite with some strict vegetarians as it contains “Fish Sauce”, but that has never put me off, and in just the time it has taken to write this review, I have finished a good 1/2 of the jar.
