West Dean Chilli Fiesta Day 2

By Hot Juan, August 7, 2010 8:19 am

It is 9.00am we have had breakfast at our budget hotel (Travel Lodge and Little Chef) and will soon be on our way to the Chilli Fiesta.

Day 2 of the West Dean Chilli Fiesta, Darth and Mrs Naga are out and about doing video interviews and a what is it like at the Chilli Fiesta, to be screen here very soon.

I started with a quick wander around the stalls, very pleased to find Why Not Hot with some stunning new products and Edible Ornamentals stand was well pack with fresh chillies, while Fire Foods new black and yellow bottles looked very dramatic.

The walled garden was not as busy as we expected, but there are some stand that must not be missed in the potting sheds including Cool Chilli Co, The Chilli Garden, Spicy Monkey and Hot-Headz (Sorry if I missed anyone out).

I had a good chat with Jan Rasmussen from “The Mission Mexican Grill with whom we are hoping to arrange a video visit to their outlet in Reading to do a how to roll your own Burrito film and well as having at look at what it takes to run a first class Mexican restaurant.

I also found a very odd product, a kind of slip-on garden shoe with a chilli pattern on it from www.backdoorshoes.co.uk ( I will put up some images very soon, so you can see what I mean).

Greenhouse Sensation had a very interesting looking product called Windowgrow, which looked like a great way to get fresh chillies in your kitchen and you need them.

Lots of music this year, including a mexican 3 piece band.

Mr Singh’s was working hard doing tastings, this is a great sauce, but only when seen as a large banner does the new look work for me, it a very clean look, but on a bottle its impact is a little lost (I did like to old labels, confused, but much more fun).

Lots of Chilli plants for sale again this year, and the chilli creche was being well used.

Lots more to mention when I get back and upload the images.

Only one day to go so if you are able get down to West Dean this Sunday and a lazy day tasting some great food.

A full set of pictures will be post very soon.

Chilli treats by Deli Welli Doo Daaa

By , July 20, 2010 9:27 am

We’ve all heard of Chilli chocolate bars and Chilli chocolate brownies. Angie Bourne and Anthony Sturge take this concept to a whole new level. This lovely couple, both with years and years of chef/catering experience, incorporate local produce and the finest ingredients to make sure they leave a lasting impression.

Deli Welli Doo Daaa make a selection of rich, sweet and fluffy muffins with a ChilliPepperPete Dragon’s Blood infusion both into the icing and the cakes themselves.

Chilli Muffins

Chilli Muffins

The rich Belgium chocolate buttercream icing, topped with sprinkles, marshmallows or chocolate discs, hide a delightfully warm feeling that leaves a very moreish, tingling sensation on your tongue. Throughout the chocolate sponge underneath the Dragon’s Blood tames, but is always there and never lets you forget.

In either dark or milk Belgian chocolate, the flavourful sauce sits in waiting, ready to ambush your taste buds. Surprisingly, the burn is relatively mild and quick, so you won’t be overpowered or unable to taste anything else. This Chilli-Muffin alliance has the right balance of flavours and heat. Unlike some competitors who have chilli with a hint of chocolate, or chocolate with a hint of chilli, these muffins will not disappoint.

Atop beautiful vanilla Dragon’s Blood buttercream icing sits a lime slice shaped and flavoured jelly sweet. Inside this muffin is a mix of red pepper, lime and coconut. Now lime and coconut have always gone hand in hand, but the addition of red pepper to the mix makes a difference you couldn’t imagine. With very small gratings of fresh lime peel and red pepper engulfed in the moist coconut sponge, one bite into the muffin gives you a zesty, fruity refreshing tang. Such an innocent looking muffin with a very clean combination of flavours is a stellar treat in my opinion.

World Hottest Chilli Ice Cream

World Hottest Chilli Ice Cream

Not only do Angie and Anthony make extraordinary cakes, they also make the worlds hottest Chilli ice cream. This is no easy task, as chilies and chilli sauces have a tendency of thinning out other ingredients which can stop the ice cream from setting correctly, thus resulting in a spicy cold mess! They combine several sauces and created three heats, one for every level of chilli addict.

Baby dragon is the mildest ice cream. Using Dragon’s blood in such a small amount still gives this deliciously thick ice cream a daring edge whilst retaining its cooling properties and is fantastic for a very interesting oral sensation.

Dragons Blood is made with the same sauce in a larger quantity; much hotter and delivers a generous kick to the back of the throat.

Satan’s Mother-in-Law leaves you with a ‘catch 22′ situation. Decadent fresh ice cream with a special sauce blend made with Nagas, among other things, leaves you with a fiery tongue that you just want to quench with more of the ice cream. Trouble is, the more you eat, the hotter it gets! A fantastic jump into mixing the hot with the cold and a must try for anyone who enjoys teasing their mind with this very entertaining combination.

This company were a massive hit at Grillstock and fortunately for us they are going to be attending at this year’s West Dean Chilli Fiesta on August 6th, 7th and 8th. So for all those reading this review and thinking of getting your mitts on their stuff, you’ll get your chance. Get it whilst its hot (lol), Stop them and buy one.

This is Mrs Naga, hoping to see you all at West Dean. Darth told me to sign off with ‘May the sauce be with you’ (rolls eyes).

The Chilli Pepper Company — Chinese Burn Review —  Oh my god, I just had to re-read that again as I didn’t believe there were only 4 ingredients in this sauce, but there is just that…only 4 ingredients. “Chinese Burn” as this particular sauce is called, no doubt gets its name from the second ingredient in the list, the rice wine.

Hot Headz Habanero Extra Hot Chilli Ketchup

Hot Headz Habanero Extra Hot Chilli Ketchup

Dartmoor Chilli Farm – Dark Chilli Chocolate — When I am going to taste a high quality dark chocolate, the first thing I test is how well is snaps, this may seem odd, but over the years I have learned that the better the quality the chocolate, the sharper and crisper the snap sounds when break off a lump.

Scott Roberts — Chilli Letter from America #4 — March in the U.S. marks the completion of the 22nd Annual National Fiery Foods and BBQ Show in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the beginning of the growing season for chile peppers across a large section of the middle of North America.

Chilli Pepper Company - Naga Mama

Chilli Pepper Company — Naga Mama

Darth Naga Reviews — Chilli Pepper Company’s Naga Mama — The sauce I have today comes from a friend of mine who runs the “Chilli Pepper Company” his name is Gerald fowler and i am sure that those of you who have been to at least one chilli festival wlast year will have met the man himself, he’s a larger than life guy who really loves the burn and everything associated with it, he’s tried all his sauces himself even the fabled “10 minute burn” that was banned from the FFUK last year, so when i say this man knows his chilli’s i’m putting it mildly!!

South Devon Chilli Farm — One-Pot Chilli Kit - A quick timely review of a new seasonal product from the South Devon Chilli Farm, so if you are looking to grow a chilli plant for the first time this year, then this may be the kit for you.

Fire Foods Nitro Video Review — The sauce I’m reviewing today comes from a relative newcomer to the UK hotsauce movement, but he’s a fast mover nonetheless and his sauces are highly recommended both by us here at the Chilefoundry and by his customers.. I am of course talking about “Woody” the owner and creator of “Firefoods” a company that prides itself on flavour above heat but oddly enough manages to excel in both departments, read on and lets have a look at what delights he has!

ASDA Rollback — Dave’s Insanity Sauce - ASDA has rolled back the price of Dave’s Insanity Sauce to just £2.98, this is a excellent price for this interesting super hot sauce, while there are better tasting sauces about, the once can truly claim to be the first.

Donino's Meltdown - The Revenge

Donino’s Meltdown — The Revenge

Domino’s Launches “Meltdown — The Revenge” Pizza — Domino’s has now launched a hot Pizza that they claim is their hottest Pizza yet, and I have to agree for a national chain of Pizza Restaurants this is a very hot Pizza, much hotter than their previous ones.

Quick and Simple Chicken and Mozzarella Quesadillas Recipe — For this recipe you will need some Mexican Style seasoning like the one we made a while ago to give this the spicy warm flavour it needs.

Chilli Pepper Peter — Naga Green Headhunter Sauce — The sauce I am reviewing today comes from a man we all know and love, mr “Chillipepperpete”, based in brighton this guy has been producing quality hot sauces for years, he also tends to win alot of awards for his sauces too! he also helps his wife Miranda out with the FFUK festival now on three times a year!! Visit www.fireyfoodsuk.co.uk for more details!

Mexican Style Seasoning Mix Quick & Cheap (for Fajitas Tacos etc) - Last week I was teaching some basic cooking and needed a seasoning mix to put on Fajitas and a few other recipes we were making, I could only use supermarket basic stuff, no whole dried chillies, and no preparation time.

Dartmoor Chill Farm - Chilli Jam

Dartmoor Chill Farm — Chilli Jam

Felbrigg Hall Chilli Fiesta & Fete —  4th August 2010 — Felbrigg Hall Chilli Fiesta is a regional food and produce festival with a leaning towards the hot end of the spectrum.

Barrington Court Chutfest — 2nd/3rd October 2010 - Last year we visited the Barrington Court Chutfest and had a great time, this year the event is on the 2nd/3rd of October so if you are anywhere near we recommend a visit.

Dartmoor Chilli Farm — Chilli Jam — Initially the taste comes from the roasted red peppers, and this is followed by the Jalapeños, with a nice sweet over tones from the Apples and Sugar. This goes well with a nice strong cheese and crackers or how about glazed on to some cooked ham.. The mouth is starting to water just thinking about the possibilities.
