This month our friends at The Dartmoor Chilli Farm have had a very hard month working to keep their farm operating as they battle the planning department of the Dartmoor National Parks Authority, who have in the past few years have awarded them for their sustainability and green credentials, have tried to close them as the planning department thinks they are unsustainable…. even so this month they have offered our readers a chance to purchase a bottle of their Dartmoor Dynamite at 50% off.

West Dean Chilli Fiesta

This years West Dean Chilli Fiesta was the biggest yet with over 20,000 visitors, up from last years 19,000.

Next year the event is moving to a different weekend and will be taking place on the 27 – 29 July 2012

I picked up a packet of Kirmizi Biber from The Chilli Pepper Company while at the West Dean Chilli Fiesta, I have come across this on my travels, but not in the UK before. I remember it as a condiment we would sprinkle on our food to add a bit more local colour, a few bags from the local food market made it back to the UK in our luggage, but this is a bit of a distant memory of a trip to Turkey (well before the kids, so that is at least 17 years ago more likely 20 years).

So what is Kirmizi Biber, well its is a mix of Hot and Sweet peppers that have been salted and dried then roughly ground into flakes which are then rubbed with olive oil and then roasted until they start to blacken. the taste starts salty and then warms you gently the flavour is a rich mix of peppers intensified by the drying and roasting.

This is really great stuff to have about in the kitchen, sprinkle some on dips before serving, on scrambled eggs it is divine, a few teaspoons on the skin of a chicken before roasting, this is the condiment of a 101 uses.

Chilli Growing Demonstrations on the North Lawn adjacent to the Plant Sales area (follow signs) at 11.00am, 1.00pm, 3.00pm–½ hour duration.

Grooves and Moves. Salsa band Latin Fiesta and sound system Salsa Twist will be laying down the rhythms on the Picnic Lawn ably complemented by Egyptian dance group, Spirit of Ishtar. Whilst on the Front Lawn it falls to Spanish band Andalus and Miguel Angel Plaza’s Salsa Magic sound system assisted by beautiful belly dancers, Meziza, to keep the toes tapping. In addition you may bump into the wandering minstrels of Mariachi Tequila anywhere around the site.

And for the kids there is a traditional Punch and Judy on the North Lawn at 11.00am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.30pm and face painting on the Picnic Lawn in aid of Children on the Edge.

MOONBITES’ CHILLI COOK-IN – FAVOURITE CHILLIES AND HOW TO USE THEM

Join food writer, Rosemary Moon, at the cookery tent on the Picnic Lawn for free cookery demonstrations showing you how to make sensational spicy summer dishes.

11:00am Poblano peppers. The wonderful Mexican vegetable-type chilli is cooked by Rosemary in a Fusion tossed salad and Amarillo Pork.
12:00 noon Caldero chilli. This medium-hot, thick fleshed chilli is sweet to taste making it ideal for Rosemary’s Oriental plum salsa to serve with fish, and fresh, sweet corn kernels cooked in a Sussex Succotash.
12.30pm Chilli healing. Warm your aches and pains away with a spice and chilli coconut enriched liniment for pain and stiffness from expert herbalists Steve Taylor and Wendy Budd.
1:00pm Hungarian Hot Wax Chillies. An all-time favourite cooked by Rosemary in a Tabbouli salsa and North African poached eggs.
1.30pm Chilli healing. Warm your aches and pains away with a spice and chilli coconut enriched liniment for pain and stiffness from expert herbalists Steve Taylor and Wendy Budd.
2:00pm What’s hot, what’s not? The team from Sea Spring Seeds take the stage to explore chilli-ness and flavour versus heat. Learn from the expert breeders of the Dorset Naga.
3:00pm Hot Chef! Giles Thompson, this valley’s Chef, shows us how he uses chillies at The Earl of March and The Partridge Inn.
4:00pm Super Chilli F1 AGM. This easy-to-grow, hot Thai-type chilli is a favourite and Rosemary uses it in a Thai Green Curry and and a Rice noodle salad.

The dates for the 2011 West Dean Chilli Fiesta have been released, the event will be held over the weekend of the 5th, 6th and 7th of August.

The Chilli Fiesta is the biggest event in the UK for the Chilli enthusiast, last year (2010) was the biggest so far with over 19,000 visitors.

West Dean Chilli Fiesta Day 2

It is 9.00am we have had breakfast at our budget hotel (Travel Lodge and Little Chef) and will soon be on our way to the Chilli Fiesta.

Day 2 of the West Dean Chilli Fiesta, Darth and Mrs Naga are out and about doing video interviews and a what is it like at the Chilli Fiesta, to be screen here very soon.

I started with a quick wander around the stalls, very pleased to find Why Not Hot with some stunning new products and Edible Ornamentals stand was well pack with fresh chillies, while Fire Foods new black and yellow bottles looked very dramatic.

The walled garden was not as busy as we expected, but there are some stand that must not be missed in the potting sheds including Cool Chilli Co, The Chilli Garden, Spicy Monkey and Hot-Headz (Sorry if I missed anyone out).

I had a good chat with Jan Rasmussen from “The Mission Mexican Grill with whom we are hoping to arrange a video visit to their outlet in Reading to do a how to roll your own Burrito film and well as having at look at what it takes to run a first class Mexican restaurant.

I also found a very odd product, a kind of slip-on garden shoe with a chilli pattern on it from www.backdoorshoes.co.uk ( I will put up some images very soon, so you can see what I mean).

Greenhouse Sensation had a very interesting looking product called Windowgrow, which looked like a great way to get fresh chillies in your kitchen and you need them.

Lots of music this year, including a mexican 3 piece band.

Mr Singh’s was working hard doing tastings, this is a great sauce, but only when seen as a large banner does the new look work for me, it a very clean look, but on a bottle its impact is a little lost (I did like to old labels, confused, but much more fun).

Lots of Chilli plants for sale again this year, and the chilli creche was being well used.

Only one day to go so if you are able get down to West Dean this Sunday and a lazy day tasting some great food.
